Up until the recent good weather and my increasing interest in bike riding further afield than the local supermarket, I had thought that GPS devices were for geeks. However, I realise now that it's quite difficult at times to cycle on unknown roads and tracks through the countryside and to have to unfold a large Ordnance Survey Map every 5 minutes to make sure you're going the right way, not least because it relies on you pinpointing your location each time before assessing your next move. I'm actually not too bad at using maps, but I thought this thing might be a bit of fun to use so I ordered one from Amazon today.

Well, I've not managed to give it a proper outing yet but it tracked me across Canterbury within a few feet! I know because I zig-zagged along a road on my bike which showed up on the tracking thing... Very cool thing!

I don't think I could cope with my phone not having Google Maps and a GPS receiver! I'd never have found that pub for Annie's birthday, at any rate

Good point... Took me a good 45 minutes to find that bloody pub... and I'd been there before!

Conversely, just think about how pathetic the human race is becoming with such dependencies! Give a 5-year old a paper map in 10 years time and see how they cope without being "tracked" and "positioned down to a precision of 10cm"!
I used to know every phone number I needed off by heart before I got my mobile... now I'll be damned if I remember any more than just my own :S
That said... it's all bloody cool
