Acorn Electron

My parents bought my brother and I our first shared computer circa 1986. It was a great little machine called the Acorn Electron, with a mighty 32kb of RAM There's one for sale on e-Bay (current bid: £9.99) and I'm really tempted to bid for it!

Some of my favorite games included The Last Ninja (screen shot below), Starship Command and Barbarian. wikipedia has an extensive list of many of the games released for the Acorn Electron.

The Last Ninja contains a blend of exploration, puzzle solving and combat which is the sort of game I enjoy to this day! I really like Baldur's Gate, for instance...

GO FOT IT!

That is not a lot of kilobytes. How disappointing for today's modern world! I had no idea this machine existed! (Same year I was born though!)

  I'll definitely keep an eye on the auction... Better check that the old machine isn't lurking in my parent's loft first though - it might still work...

never heard of computers till 1990.. 1986? i was 5 years old

aah i have had the pleasure of seeing a compaq 1995 laptop weighing a ton and with windows 95 in it

        sure is ancient history.. i never had a pc at home till 2004.. i mostly worked on PC from work or a internet cafe place.

My first was a 16K Sinclair Spectrum, in 1982. I wonder if there are still any working ones of those? I might have to have a look on ebay! There were some great games on that too.

It was that Spectrum that launched me on a career as a computer programmer and systems administrator.

  I'm sure there are still plenty of Spectrums out there, Tom! It's interesting how things you thought incidental in your teens can set you on certain paths for the rest of your life...!

My dad bought the same machine for my brother and I around 1986, too! It was also our first computer.

We then progressed from this to the Amstrad CPC 6128 which had... DISK DRIVE!... COLOUR MONITOR!... and WHOPPING 128kB of RAM!

  I loved that thing! Spurred on by my recent recollection of this I managed to find an Acorn Electron Emulator at http://electrem.acornelectron.co.uk/ and a load of games at http://www.stairwaytohell.com/index2.html so, I was playing Snapper, Magic Mushrooms, Starship Command, Arcadians and Barbarian last night!

First games machine was a binatone, then the spectrum - Dad used to sit there typing in codes for hours, just to get a game up - But my most favourite was the commadore 64 ( please excuse the spelling ) We still have it floating about in Dads attic, pop in the tape and wait around 20 minutes for it to load...Games like Bubble Bobble, Dayley Thompson's atheletic games and the one I loved best was Frankie goes to Hollywood game. Oh brings back some memories those.

  Binatone! Never heard of that one! Of course, the Spectrum was a classic though and the Commodore 64 (don't know how to spell it either, so we're probably both wrong!)
  
  I'd forgotten about having to load the tapes! Did yours used to make that awful screeching noise if you turned the volume up?

    Yep...Oh how funny, we had to turn our little portable on mute when we loaded the game as well. And the tape player used to make a clicking noise when it went round.
    
    Thank god the Sega and Ninetindo slot in games came out..When we got our's, we where like 'wow'.
    
    I have got every games console that we ever had, still - Apart from the Sega Mega Drive. I love playing games now to.
